Impact of Grain-Coating Clays on Porosity Preservation in Paleocene Turbidite Channel Sandstones: Nelson Oil Field, UK Central North Sea

چکیده

The Forties Sandstone Member is an important deep-water reservoir in the Central North Sea. role of depositional characteristics, grain-coating clays, and diagenesis controlling quality sandstones poorly understood. main aim study to understand pore-filling evolution turbidite-channel sandstones. employed a multi-disciplinary technique involving thin section petrography scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigate impact grain size, clay matrix content, mode occurrence chlorite illite, their arresting quartz cementation overall Results our reveal that porosity has been influenced by both primary characteristics diagenesis. Sandstones with coarser size lower content have best (up 28%) compared those finer higher content. Quartz cement volume decreases increasing clay-coating coverage. Clay coating coverage >40% effective cementation. Total as low 10% could deleterious on quality. potentially be suitable candidate for physical mineralogical storage CO2. However, because its high proportion (>20%) chemically unstable minerals (feldspar, carbonates, clays), dissolution due CO2 injection increase permeability order magnitude, thereby affecting geomechanical tensile strength Therefore, experimental investigating amount injected (and at what pressure) required maintain preserve borehole integrity. findings can applied other reservoirs similar environments improve prediction.

Enhanced porosity preservation by pore fluid overpressure and chlorite grain coatings in the Triassic Skagerrak, Central Graben, North Sea, UK

Current understanding of porosity preservation in deeply buried sandstone reservoirs tends to be focused on how diagenetic grain coatings of clay minerals and microquartz can inhibit macroquartz cementation. However, the importance of overpressure developed during initial (shallow) burial in maintaining high primary porosity during subsequent burial has generally not been appreciated. Where por...

Elasticity of High-porosity Sandstones: Theory for Two North Sea Datasets

We have analyzed two laboratory datasets obtained on high-porosity rock samples from the North Sea. The velocities observed are unusual in that they seem to disagree with some simple models based on porosity. On the other hand, the rocks are unusually poorly-cemented (for laboratory studies, at least), and we investigate the likelihood that this is the cause of the disagreement. One set of rock...

Distribution of thermophilic marine sulfate reducers in north sea oil field waters and oil reservoirs.

The distribution of thermophilic marine sulfate reducers in produced oil reservoir waters from the Gullfaks oil field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea was investigated by using enrichment cultures and genus-specific fluorescent antibodies produced against the genera Archaeoglobus, Desulfotomaculum, and Thermodesulforhabdus. The thermophilic marine sulfate reducers in this environment co...
